Things to do in Verona

Admire the 1st Century AmphitheatreVerona

On your short break to Verona, you definitely shouldn’t miss the mammoth amphitheatre that dominates the city. Built in the 1st Century AD, this amphitheatre survived a 12th-century earthquake, which led it to become Verona’s open-air opera house and seats 30,000 people. It’s the eighth biggest amphitheatre in the Roman Empire and predates the Colosseum in Rome! Wander through the dark ancient corridors, which are just wide enough to drive a gladiator’s chariot down and you’ll re-emerge into the massive, sunlit stone area and gaze up at the 50 levels of seating which surrounds the oval showground. It’s home to Verona’s annual summer opera festival, which shouldn’t be missed! It is open all year around and admission is only €1 on the first Sunday of the month from January to May and October to December.

Declare your love at Casa di Giulietta (House of Juliet)Verona

It’s safe to say that one of the biggest attractions for holidays in Verona is that the heartbreaking story of star-crossed lovers falling in forbidden love is set here and people love to come and retrace the tragic paths of Romeo and Juliet. You can now visit and discover the home of Juliet in the city, it’s open Tuesday – Sunday 8:30am – 7:30pm and open Monday from 1:30pm - it’ll cost you just €6 to get in. It’s thought to have once belonged to the Capuleti family - the real-life equivalent of Shakespeare’s Capulets - and the house dates back to the 12th Century. Take a walk around the courtyard and you’ll come across a bronze statue of Juliet, while the interiors are decorated 14th-century style. Since then a balcony was added to imitate the world-famous play.

Take a trip to Lake GardaVerona

If you have a day free on your Verona city break and want to escape the metropolitan life, then head to Lake Garda which sits just outside the city. It’s the largest and most popular of the Italian lakes; it sits in between Milan and Venice and is the heart of Northern Italy. The lake itself covers over three regions; it has 90 miles of shorelines and 15 stunning towns located around it, which are well worth a visit if you have time. The northern side of the lake features more mountainous landscapes and hillside villages with harbour towns that line the shores of the lake, whereas the south benefits from the sun and a Mediterranean climate, with an array of olive trees and lemon groves!

When to visit Verona

If you’re interested in seeing some opera at the Arena, then it’s definitely worth booking your cheap holiday to Verona in the summer as the whole amphitheatre is open so it may not be as pleasant on a rainy day.
